Policy Campaigns
Action for Market Towns is the national voice for small towns and is currently developing policy statements across some key areas impacting on market towns. These include:
- Prosperous Places – creating the conditions for vibrant and economically sustainable towns
- Community Led Planning – supporting the grassroots in getting involved in developing the wider community
- Rural Services – ensuring that people living in or near to market towns have the services they need
- Housing – ensuring that affordable housing is developed appropriately within these areas
For each subject area, we are producing a Policy Position Statement – this takes on board all current and emerging policy relating to this area and sets out how we, and our members, believe that the topic should be dealt with.
We are also producing Policy into Practice Papers. These are in-depth reports, created for our members, which cover topical issues of importance to market towns and help to steer through the maze of jargon which town partnerships face.
From the Knowledge Hub toolbar and AMT Policies, scroll across onto each of the campaign areas to find out more.
More papers will follow in the coming months. If you have any questions or comments, please contact alison.eardley@towns.org.uk

Market towns have been hard hit by the recession, with unemployment overall rising by a third more than in the nation as a whole. Shop vacancies have increased and empty shops are getting harder to let.
