Knowledge Hub
Action for Market Towns (AMT) is a charity representing the interests of market towns and their associated partnerships. The AMT Policy Manager is Alison Eardley, who can be contacted at alison.eardley@towns.org.uk.
The Knowledge Hub is the strategic, policy side to AMT. It is intended to be the place for members to come to if you require any support on developing strategies, influencing policy and understanding current conditions that may impact you and your town.
AMT has received Big Lottery funding to help the work it undertakes to support market towns. This funding has allowed the creation of the Knowledge Hub, which has two purposes:
1) Assisting market towns at the local level – we are building up a Strategic Information Service for use by organisations who have an involvement in market towns. This is to be a directory of information relating to all aspects of market town policy and we hope that it will be a place where you can come for help and assistance when developing strategies for your local area.
2) Influencing Government policy – AMT is working to be the voice for market towns and sees a role in shaping Government policy to reflect the needs of small towns. A Market Towns Policy Forum has been established to undertake research into medium to long-term issues affecting such towns, and we hope that this will provide the vehicle to play a greater role in influencing policy at the national, regional and subregional level.
These pages will be populated over the coming weeks and months, so please check back regularly. If you are looking for something but cannot find it, or have a question, please do not hesitate to get in touch – alison.eardley@towns.org.uk

Market towns have been hard hit by the recession, with unemployment overall rising by a third more than in the nation as a whole. Shop vacancies have increased and empty shops are getting harder to let.
