Sign the Living Streets Pledge to help the campaign to make streets in our towns safer and more attractive to pedestrians.

Living Streets is the national charity for pedestrians which works to create safe, attractive streets where people want to walk.

They have started campaigning work with the new government and will be holding second meetings with relevant ministers soon. But they really need to show support from a wide section of the community.

So if you too believe that streets should be safe and attractive for people to enjoy walking them sign the Living Streets Pledge.

A ‘barrier-busting’ team is being established by Communities and Local Government to help community groups get the backing they need when they encounter bureaucratic obstacles to local objectives.

In a major speech to the Policy Exchange, Minister for Decentralisation Greg Clark said: “If we want change to happen at the most local level, then we have to understand that at such a scale even the slightest bureaucratic hurdle looms large. Furthermore, it is very difficult for community institutions to get the help they need to get around these obstacles. That is why we need to turn central government upside down and inside-out. Instead of the civil service only being focused upwards on providing advice to Ministers – and inwards on its own priorities – we must drive the focus downwards and outwards to put those resources at the service of communities nationwide.”

The next Towns Alive seminar is on Wednesday 15 September in Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Following a very successful seminar on ‘Attracting and Retaining Visitors’ in May, bookings are now open for our next North Yorkshire Towns Alive seminar which focuses on ‘How to market your town’.

Come along and find out how you can improve the marketing of your town on a limited budget.

Susan Briggs, a North Yorkshire based marketing specialist, will offer a practical and straightforward insight into low cost marketing activities that work, including:

Deciding on a Unique Selling Point (USP) – some practical examples and options

Which promotional tools work best, and when?

Very quick, simple ways to market on the web – whether you have a website already or not

How to write press releases to get no-cost publicity and attract more funders

Working together – collaborative approaches and ideas that nearly always work

Not just ‘yet another leaflet’… easy fast ways to massively improve print material – and do it without a big budget

Practical sessions will be interspersed throughout the day so the learning is interactive and fast moving. You should go home feeling enthused, excited and not just clear about what you have to do next to improve your marketing – you’ll have already started it before the end of the day!

You will also be able to hear from one town which has done just this and, having identified their USP, have used it to promote their town with award winning results.

Download the programme for the day: How to market your town – seminar programme

Action for Market Towns works hard throughout the year to provide support for towns throughout the country. Here are just some of the things AMT achieved in the past year:

140 market town representatives attended AMT’s Towns Alive Networking events in 2009/10, benefitting from the sharing of experience and ideas.

88 towns show cased their projects by entering the 2009 market town awards – and a similar number have entered in 2010.

43 people from 31 different community organisations attended AMT Academy Training, helping to increase the capacity and sustainability of their organisations.

AMT provided policy information via our E Strategy Bulletin to more than 100 strategic partners and other policy contacts, helping to influence policy related to our market towns.

AMT provided information on latest developments relating to small towns to all its members through its monthly e-newsletter Insight.

36 new case studies were added to the members database of good practice and research on a further 30 projects was completed and will be added in the near future. Case studies of the winning entries in the 2010 Market Town Awards will be added to the growing case studies database, providing information and inspiration to members.

Five towns benefited from AMT’s Exchange Programme, helping them learn from the experience of other towns and start their own similar projects, ranging from developing local food projects and town loyalty schemes to becoming an IT town. Click here for more information on the exchange grant.

87 market town organisations became new AMT members in 2009/10 greatly increasing the potential for networking and shared learning.

Over 200 delegates attended the Action for Market Towns Convention in Melton Mowbray in October 2009 – THE towns event of the year.
