Marketing your community – increasing footfall to your town or village
By Katie Fewings • Apr 12th, 2011 • Category: EventsAction for Market Towns and Hidden Britain are working together to help small towns and communities understand how they can increase visibility and footfall through improved marketing.
In response to requests from towns and communities in the West of the country we repeated our popular ‘Marketing your community’ workshop in Shepton Mallet, North Somerset on 7 June 2011.
This workshop, kindly hosted by Mendip District Council, helped towns think about ways in which they could improve the profile of their town and do it at low cost.
Destination marketing
The workshop provided a practical introduction to the principles of destination marketing:
- establish what your town or village has to offer to both visitors and residents
- understand how to ‘sell’ this better
The training introduced delegates to new and traditional methods of getting the word out, from old-fashioned leaflets to new-fangled Twitter.
Presentations from rural tourism and marketing experts
Sessions were led by rural tourism and marketing experts from AMT and Hidden Britain, supported by case studies from communities who had already been through this process.

Workshops to develop a marketing strategy
In the afternoon we worked in smaller groups and took delegates through the key marketing channels to help them develop their own strategy, applicable to their town or village.
Delegates went home feeling enthused, excited and not just clear about what they had to do next to improve their marketing – they had already started it before the end of the day!
