A framework for town-sized Community Led Planning

Town Action Planning FrameworkThis new AMT Town Action Planning handbook provides a step-by-step guide to setting up and completing a Community Led Plan for a small town. It is based on an original Countryside Agency handbook, but updated with current best practice, resources and references.

The latest version incorporates collaborative work with ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England), including both town plans and parish plans, within an overall concept called LEAD (Launch, Evidence, Agree, Deliver&Monitor) to help align Community Led Planning exercises and assist the transferability of ideas and data with other groups.

The user-friendly handbook contains detailed information on how to develop a community-led plan and is supported by a series of worksheets.

The full handbook and worksheets are free to download for AMT members, under a licence for their own use.

Non-members can purchase the handbook and worksheets, also for their own use, for £25.

We can support you in your planning

Putting together a Town Action Plan is a thorough process.  The workbook provides an invaluable guide to this, but you might want to explore the opportunities presented by getting support from an independent facilitator.  These are people who are experienced in working with a range of communties and working through the steps required to publish and deliver a Community Led Plan.  They can bring an objective and impartial view to the table and help you through the process.

If you would like to find out more about how a facilitiator might help you, please contact Academy@towns.org.uk - support can range from an introduction to Community Led Planning, and introduction to the steps involved in producing a Town Action Plan, to practical help on all or some of the actual processes involved.  We can also provide training for your partnership on skills that might be useful during your work, such as chairmanship skills, identifying funding opportunities and research techniqes.

If you are interested in finding out more about Neighbourhood Planning and how you might develop a Neighbourhood Plan, please contact us for more support.  This is a policy that is still in development and very much subject to change as it passes through Parliament.  We can help you in understanding what it is and how best to prepare for it.

Facilitators endorsed by AMT are able to provide practical advice and support to you and your communities in developing your plan. Working independently from the local authorities they are well positioned to bridge the gap between communities and local authorities in an impartial manner. With considerable expertise in consultation techniques and their experience of working across a range of communities, they are effective at catalysing local activity and securing the support of other key stakeholders along the way.

Community Led Planning

Community Led Planning is one of AMT’s key themes under the Towns Alive programme.
