Greengrocery co-op saves shop

By • Feb 15th, 2010 • Category: frontpage, News

The West Yorkshire town of Slaithwaite has saved its local greengrocer -  by setting up a co-operative to take it over and run it. The shop was on its last legs and had been on the market for some time.

A community share issue was launched, with shares priced at £1, with a minimum purchase of £10. The response was almost overwhelming. Within a week, £12,000 had been raised, enough to buy the business, begin the refurbishment and start to restock the shop.

The Green Valley Grocer smashed its sales targets and has had a positive effect on the trading of nearby businesses. Three months after opening, its turnover was five times that of the old shop.
