Local food could be worth billions

By • Nov 25th, 2008 • Category: News

Local food sales could grow 20 per cent a year, giving local food a 10 per cent market share with sales of £15.6 billion a year within a decade, according to a new report.

The report ‘Supplying Local Food to Mainstream Customers’ was written by Henry Brown, of Westley Consulting and Cumbrian farmer John Geldard. It calls for an industry steering group to help grow the local food market. It claims local food can help boost farmer returns as well as address issues surrounding food miles, carbon emissions and global food security.

Following industry-wide support for the report’s recommendations, a steering group has been established to provide direction, comprising sector leaders with expertise in local production, distribution and purchase. More details at: Local food steering group
